SHOOT NATIONS - Picture Power
Shoot Nations is a joint partnership between Plan UK and Shoot Experience to encourage young people to express their thoughts on issues of power, control and participation through photography and drawings. Shoot Nations aims to use these art forms as tools of cross-cultural, language-free communication.
Shoot Nations is being produced in conjunction with International Youth Day, Sunday 12th August 2007. IYD falls on a Sunday this year and so most activities will be arranged for Friday 10th August 2007.
The aim of Shoot Nations is to engage young people of all backgrounds from around the world to question the choices that govern their own lives. Using photography as a tool, Shoot Nations will allow young people to creatively express their views using a tangible and accessible format. The Shoot Nations exhibition will tour major global cities and facilitate a series of youth workshops on Governance and photography with young people.
We aim to make the online competition as accessible to as many young people as possible. For those without access to a camera, drawings can also be submitted by post. The competition is open for one month from Friday 15th June to Monday 23rd July.
The first Shoot Nations took place in 2006. The competition attracted entrants from over 30 countries and an exhibition ran in London for one week at the Association of Photographer's gallery.
Shoot Nations 2006 was funded in part by The Shoreditch Trust's youth division - Shore Thing. Young people in Shoreditch were actively involved in the project.
UN's International Youth Day - Sunday 12th August 2007
The theme for the 2007 commemoration of International Youth Day is:
"BE SEEN, BE HEARD: YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN DEVELOPMENT"
International Youth Day gives the world an opportunity to recognise the potential of its youth, to celebrate their achievements, and plan for ways to assist young people and their communities to better engage youth in development. It presents a unique opportunity for all stakeholders to take action to ensure that young people are included in global, national and local affairs and decision-making.
