SHOOT NATIONS - Picture Power
'Governance' is a term that's difficult to capture in one simple definition, and so we've created Two briefs that will get you thinking about different elements of it.
It is all about people coming together to accomplish an end, hopefully making a decision that is acceptable to as many people as possible.
Those involved in governance get to steer the direction of how things work, and ultimately make the decisions about what gets done. Governance usually involves lots of people in a forum so that not just one person calls the shots.
Another aspect of governance is accountability, people need to know that their opinions have been taken on board when decisions are made.
The United Nations published a list of characteristics on what good governance is.
These include:
- Participation: providing everyone with a say in decision-making;
- Transparency: the free flow of information;
- Responsiveness: of those making decisions to the input of others;
- Getting a consensus on different interests and ideas to be fair;
- Meeting needs and getting the most out of what we have;
- Having a vision of what is needed that is long-term.
Shoot Experience and Plan International want to hear what your ideas on governance are. The Two briefs are designed to get you thinking about:
- The things that you would like to change and how you'd go about changing them
- The people you think hold power and the ability to make change.
This can be from any aspect of your life - there's no right or wrong answer and we're not going to dictate the brief to you - it's all about what you think. So get snapping!
